Participation of an IPLESP doctoral student in the final of Sorbonne University's ‘Ma thèse en 180 secondes’

On 25 March 2024, the Sorbonne University final of ‘Ma thèse en 180 secondes’ took place. This was a unique opportunity for doctoral students to share their work with the public and professionals from different backgrounds. After brilliantly winning the first selection rounds, Marie Pouquet proudly represented the IPLESP in the impressive auditorium of Sorbonne Université's international conference centre!

Participation of an IPLESP doctoral student in the final of Sorbonne University's ‘Ma thèse en 180 secondes’

An international French-language competition in existence since 2014, ‘Ma thèse en 180 secondes’ brings together doctoral students from all disciplines with a common goal: to pass on their passion for their research subject to as many people as possible.

However, it's not an easy exercise, since, as the name suggests, each candidate has just 3 minutes to convince!

As it does every year, Sorbonne Université offers to prepare potential candidates for this exercise.  First of all, there is an initial day of training open to all, followed by an initial internal selection stage, then two days of training with a professional from the sector, and finally the final in front of the public and a jury of professionals.

As Marie told us, it was an intense and fantastic experience. First of all, the training part, which enables to acquire the scientific mediation skills that are essential for the future career of researchers. It also helps to acquire communication skills, since the candidates work on voice and posture: essential for presentations at conferences and thesis defense! Finally, it's a human experience, as the 18 candidates, from different backgrounds, share these moments of preparation, stress and finally the apotheosis, the show in front of the public.

Even though she was not one of the two candidates selected for the national final, Marie has fond memories of this adventure. Her performance was noticed, since Sorbonne wants to do a portrait of her: the University’s communication team will be at the IPLESP in April to film her research activities.

All in all, it was a unique and unforgettable experience, a chance to surpass yourself and open up new personal and professional perspectives. And you, when will you be taking part in MT180?
